2024 Personal Tax Filing Deadline: What You Need to Know
The deadline for most Canadians to file their 2023 T1 personal income tax return is April 30, 2024. Self-employed individuals have until June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30. Here's how to prepare.
The annual personal tax filing deadline is one of the most important dates on the Canadian financial calendar. For the 2023 tax year, the deadline for most individuals to file their T1 personal income tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency is April 30, 2024. Missing this date can result in penalties, interest charges, and delays in receiving any refund you may be owed.
Self-employed individuals and their spouses or common-law partners have an extended filing deadline of June 15, 2024. However, it is important to note that any balance owing to CRA is still due by April 30. If you owe taxes and do not pay by that date, interest will begin to accrue regardless of the extended filing deadline.
To prepare for a smooth filing, gather all relevant tax documents well in advance. This includes T4 slips from employers, T5 slips for investment income, RRSP contribution receipts, charitable donation receipts, and any receipts for medical expenses or other eligible deductions. If you are self-employed, ensure your business income and expense records are organized and reconciled.
Consider whether you are eligible for commonly overlooked credits and deductions. The Canada Workers Benefit, home office expenses (if you worked from home), moving expenses for employment or education, and tuition credits are frequently missed. A CPA can help identify deductions specific to your situation and ensure you are not leaving money on the table.
If you are unable to file by the deadline, it is still better to file late than not at all. Late-filing penalties start at 5% of the balance owing, plus 1% for each additional full month the return is late, up to a maximum of 12 months. If you have filed late in previous years as well, the penalties can be significantly higher.
